Raised money for DC Scores and Special Olympics Maryland via Host’s internal, online charitable marketplace. Employees bid on hotels stays, home décor, sports memorabilia and more donated by our hotels, vendors and local businesses. Every bid contributed directly to support the two local organizations to empower youth and promote holistic health and well-being.
Partnered with Rock Creek Conservancy to help protect and restore Rock Creek and its wildlife and parklands by wrangling and removing non-native, invasive plants and weeds around the grounds of the Rock Creek Park Nature Center in Washington, D.C.
Partnered with Playtime Project to host a back-to-school drive for kids facing housing insecurity in the Washington, D.C. area. Donated school supplies—including pencils, paper, notebooks, binders, calculators and many other essentials—to ensure local students in need are equipped to succeed this school year.
Organized by Host’s Green Team, partnered with Latin American Youth Center to beautify the grounds at their Maryland Multicultural Youth Center. Volunteers helped mulch and plant shrubs and flowers in the entryway and build a vegetable and herb garden that will be cared for by the youth in LAYC’s after school programs.
Partnered with Comfort Cases to help bring hope and dignity to youth in foster care. Volunteers packed backpacks filled with comfort and personal care items for a child’s first few days in the foster care system and made fleece blankets. Ran a toiletry drive where we collected travel-sized toiletries and other essentials to include in bags for children.
Organized a clothing drive, collecting new and gently used men’s and women’s professional clothing and accessories for A Wider Circle’s Professional Development Center, which provides professional clothing free-of-charge to anyone who needs it. Toured the organization’s facility in Silver Spring, MD to see first-hand the impact of our clothing donations and our furniture donations from local hotel renovation projects.
Partnered with Central Union Mission to help make the holidays a little brighter for less fortunate families in our local community. Sponsored 70 at-risk local children whose families are struggling financially by purchasing gifts and winter coats and wrapping presents.
Purchased items for supply bags that are presented to a veteran when paired with a service dog. Volunteers wrapped each item, assembled the bags and wrote thank you notes to be included in each bag. Representatives from WCC, along with three service dogs, were available to talk about how their training program provides therapeutic benefits for veterans, and participants enjoyed snacks from Dog Tag Bakery in Washington, D.C., which serves as a teaching ground to empower veterans and military families to find renewed purpose.
Built playhouses with Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland at the Silver Spring Habitat ReStore. Participants spent the day deciphering instructions, assembling the structures and painting each playhouse with bright and cheerful colors. Volunteers also took part in an insightful lunch-and-learn led by Habitat team members. The completed playhouses will be donated to Habitat partner families, auctioned off to raise funds for the organization’s programs and services or gifted to local institutions that serve children.
Teamed up with Second Chance Wildlife Center to help injured and orphaned wild animals in our area. Volunteers cleaned out the organization’s barn, carrying out old cages, machinery and pieces of wood to the dumpster, filling all three dumpsters to the brim. Volunteers also had the opportunity to help with the animals being cared for, including turtles and baby squirrels.
Partnered with FRESHFARM—a local nonprofit that works to create a more equitable and sustainable food future—to build the legacy FoodPrints garden for young students at the School Without Walls at Francis-Stevens in Washington, D.C. Volunteers helped mulch garden paths and build pollinator and vegetable gardens.
As part of our strategic partnership and support of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, participated in Project Clean Stream—the Alliance's seasonal clean up where volunteers come together in their local communities to help foster a healthier and more sustainable Chesapeake.
