Pack the Pantry with Capital Area Food Bank

04/01/2019

In the Washington D.C. metro area, nearly 700,000 residents are at risk of hunger. On Tuesday, March 12, 24 employees joined Host’s service team to volunteer at Capital Area Food Bank, the largest organization in the area working to solve hunger and its companion problems. Additionally, over the past month, Host employees made an even greater impact and helped pack the pantries of our neighbors through a food drive and packaging event.

Volunteers sorted through a large donation of meat, attaching nutritional information for those that did not have labels and grouping similar items together. In all, we packed almost 200 boxes, weighing about 40 pounds each. The team was so fast at this task that the volunteer coordinator moved us to another room to remove bags of cereal from over 1,400 boxes and attach nutritional information labels.

We packed over 7,000 pounds of food and donated over 200 pounds of non-perishable items.

We ended the day with a behind-the-scenes tour of the warehouse in which we learned more about how the organization makes healthy food available to those in our community.
