Host's Corporate Headquarters Achieves LEED Gold and Fitwel Certifications
12/11/2020
Host’s new corporate headquarters in downtown Bethesda, Maryland recently achieved two certifications recognizing the building’s commitment to sustainability and health and well-being.
LEED® Gold Certification
Our office has been certified as LEED Gold for Interior Design + Construction by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and provides a framework for healthy, resource-efficient and cost-saving green buildings. Achieving LEED Gold reflects our commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability leadership.
Sustainability highlights that contributed to the building’s LEED Gold certification include access to transit, amenities and services; energy savings due to highly efficient lighting, HVAC systems and advanced building management systems; and water reduction due to low-flow fixtures.
This achievement was a collaborative effort between our design firm, Gensler; our building owner and management company, JBG SMITH; and Host.

Fitwel® Multi-Tenant Whole Building Certification
The building was also awarded a Fitwel rating by the Center for Active Design, the world’s leading certification system for buildings that optimizes design and operations to support occupant health and well-being. Fitwel Multi-Tenant Whole Building certification applies to all spaces within a commercial building whose floors and common areas are occupied by multiple tenants, including Host. This certification demonstrates our commitment to promoting health and physical, mental, and social well-being by incorporating evidence-based building design and operational strategies. Specific highlights of our building include access to the outdoors, superior indoor air quality management, active design, natural light and an onsite fitness center.
Fitwel’s seven health impact categories that buildings are assessed on address a broad range of health behaviors and risks, including: surrounding community health, morbidity and absenteeism, social equity for vulnerable populations, well-being, access to healthy foods, occupant safety and physical activity.
This achievement was a joint effort led by our building owner and management company, JBG SMITH.
