In August 2016, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa received the Hyatt Thrive Leadership Award for excellence in Environmental Sustainability. The Hyatt Thrive Leadership Award recognizes hotels and field offices that embody Hyatt’s commitment to thriving communities by demonstrating exemplary leadership in environmental sustainability and/or community engagement. The hotel celebrated this achievement on Monday, October 17 which was declared “Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa Malama ‘Aina Leadership Day” by Mayor Arakawa.

 

Hyatt Regency Maui became the first resort in Hawaii to achieve LEED® Silver EBOM status in 2014. In February 2016, Host Hotels & Resorts, L.P. completed the installation of a photovoltaic system. The 1,800 solar panel system will contribute to the resort’s sustainability efforts by generating more than 7 percent of its annual power needs from solar energy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that is enough power to supply 158 average-sized homes.

 

Other key features that demonstrate the Hyatt Regency Maui’s dedication to environmental sustainability include state-of-the art guestroom energy management systems and heat recovery equipment, LED lighting, low flow water fixtures, non-turf landscaping, a weather-based irrigation system, a comprehensive guest room recycling program and a self-guided walking tour that highlights the resort’s sustainability efforts.

 

On August 23, the Fairmont Kea Lani also commemorated the installation of its photovoltaic system with a Power Up Celebration. The 500 kilowatt, 1,528 panel system is expected to generate in excess of 10 percent of the resort’s total electrical needs. In addition, the expected resulting reduction in carbon emissions (462 metric tons of CO2e) is the equivalent of removing 97 cars from local roads each year, according to the EPA.
