In May 2017, the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina received the 2016 San Diego Gas & Electric Energy Champion of the Year Award for Hospitality. The property was recognized for its commitment to finding new and innovative ways to be sustainable and energy efficient while still maintaining its high standard of guest experience.
In June 2016, the hotel, with investment from Host Hotels & Resorts, opened a new exhibit hall featuring two 36,000 square foot ballrooms, an outdoor event space and a landscaped marina walk. The hotel participated in the SDG&E Savings by Design Program, which encourages high performance design and construction projects that showcase economic and energy efficiency. Sustainability features include clear, low-reflective glass, high-efficiency chiller and HVAC systems, low-flow water fixtures, water efficient landscaping and LED lighting. The new meeting space was designed to be LEED ® Silver BD+C: New Construction and is currently undergoing the certification process.
The property’s other initiatives include an active Green Team, food composting and recycling on site and an e-waste center for employees.
