Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa Achieves LEED Gold

10/23/2019

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is the second Host property to receive LEED® Gold Certification. The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building program is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of high-performance green buildings. Host owns eight LEED® certified properties, including 1 Hotel South Beach and Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is the first resort in Hawaii to increase the certification level from Silver Level LEED-EBOM to Gold Level LEED-EBOM using Arc, a digital performance platform. The property features an on-site, self-guided sustainability tour that consists of eight signs strategically placed around the property to educate guests, visitors and associates alike of these efforts.

Some of the property’s featured sustainability initiatives include:

Food & Water Waste

  • Procuring food from natural, local and sustainable sources.
  • Diverting food waste by carefully separating fruit and vegetable scraps and donating them to local pig farms for feed and compost.

Water

  • Installing advanced pool filtration technology in the resort’s six pools.
  • Retrofitting all guestrooms with high-efficiency shower heads, thereby reducing water consumption by over 30%.
  • Using municipally treated greywater to irrigate portions of the property grounds.

Materials & Recycling

  • Increasing landfill diversion from 38% to 75% in the last year.
  • Recycling about 90% of applicable products.
  • Reducing material waste by working with vendors that offer eco-friendly packaging for items shipped to the resort.

Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency

  • Reducing energy by over 38% in the last 12 years.
  • Installing one of the largest rooftop photovoltaic systems in Hawaii, which produces enough power for 2,144 homes for a year.

Ocean & Landscape

  • Installing stormwater management features and native vegetation that minimize the chance of stormwater flowing into the sea.
  • Educating guests on topics like proper sunscreen use to minimize potential impacts on reef ecosystems.

Indoor Air Quality & Green Cleaning

  • Instituting a Green Cleaning Policy which requires that cleaning products meet nationally recognized eco standards.
  • Applying an Integrated Pest Management plan that outlines procedures to eliminate pests through non-toxic means.
  • Using only products that have low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Conducting annual indoor air quality sampling.

Transportation

  • Reducing the number of single occupant vehicles traveling to and from work by 28% by encouraging employees to utilize carpooling, walking, biking and using public transportation.
